Women Basketball Continues to Struggle

Coach Kelley Watts called the Northeast 10, "the toughest conference for Division II basketball." The Panthers are finding out exactly what their head coach meant by this through the first four games of the season.

The Panthers are currently (0-3) in Northeast-10 conference play while stumbling to an (0-4) record overall. Despite solid play from Theresa Foley and Ashley Caiafa, the Panthers are suffering from the inability to rebound the basketball. They currently are being out rebounded by an average of 14 boards a game. If Coach Watts and company are to end this losing streak, it must start with being aggressive on the boards.

Men's Lacrosse Helps Give Away 3,500 Turkeys To The Community

Members of the team joined up with Mid Island Collision on November 25.

Garden City, N.Y. -

On Wednesday, November 25, members of the Adelphi University men's lacrosse team teamed up with Bob Jesberger, the owner of Mid Island Collision in Rockville Centre, N.Y., to help give away 3,500 turkeys, canned goods, and warm clothes to the neediest families of the local Long Island community.

"It was a great chance for us to do something nice and to help those who really need it," said sophomore attack man Joe Vitale.

Following the day's events the team was left with fifteen turkeys and in an effort to see them all be distributed, the team then transported and donated the remaining turkey's to the Boys and Girls Club in Hempstead, N.Y. and The Salvation Army.

"It was a great chance to hand out food and remember why we celebrate Thanksgiving," said sophomore defenseman Nick Mastronardi. "It also wound up being a workout lifting that many turkeys into trucks and vans, and it will be one Thanksgiving that I will always remember."

When summarizing the day's events, third-year head coach Gordon Purdie added:"It was exciting to see so many players giving and sharing their time to help others. At the end of the day we as a team were reminded of what Thanksgiving is truly all about."

Men's Basketball

The 2009-2010 Men's Basketball team is off to a fast start this season as they are undefeated in their first five games, going 3-0 in Northeast 10 conference play. Much of their success this season can be due in part to the elevated play of Guard Richard Byrd, who is averaging close to 23 points a game.

The Men's team will look to continue their winning ways tonight against Southern Connecticut State.

1 on 1 with Amy Williams

Amy Williams Spotlight

BY JOHN OTANO

Amy Williams, senior, is a Business Management major and an integral part of the Volleyball team at Adelphi University. In 2008, Williams, from Bloomington, Indiana, was selected to the East Coast Conference third-team to go along with an ACVA Division II All Regional Selection. This season for the Panthers, Williams leads the team in digs (516) and digs per game at nearly four digs a game.

Q: Why did you choose to be a Panther?

“At the last minute I decided that I wanted to play college volleyball. I toured some schools in the Northeast and I liked Adelphi the best. I wanted to be close to New York City.”

Q: What is the best thing about being a member of the Volleyball team?

“My teammates. Hands down. They are some of the most amazing, fun people to be around. They just bring really great energy. They’re the people that can pick me up after a bad day.”

Q: What is your favorite thing to do on campus? Off campus?

“On campus, spending time with my teammates. While off campus, I enjoy going to the city.”

Q: Who has influenced you most academically and athletically?“

"My parents. Definitely. They’ve always been my support system. They rock.”

Q: What is your most embarrassing moment in sports?

“I have had many embarrassing moments in sports. I can tell you my last embarrassing moment was last weekend during one of our games. I got aced on. That happens commonly so it’s not really a big deal but the fact is I thought a ball was out. It was very much in bounds so that was pretty embarrassing. Pretty embarrassing.”

Q: What is your most memorable moment in sports?

“Qualifying the NCAA’s in my sophomore year. That was the first year that’d I’ve ever been exposed to that level of competition. It was the first year that our volleyball program at Adelphi had ever made the NCAA’s.”

Q: Most recently played songs on your iPod:

“A big mish-mosh of randomness. Ingram Michaelson- Morning Lullabies, I love that song. The Beatles- Across the Universe. Empire State of Mind- Jay-Z and Alicia Keys. I like the band The Muse.

Q: Four favorite foods:

“ I like Kimchi. It’s a Korean spiced cabbage. Cheesecake. Burritos. I’m getting hungry as I speak”

Q: Three things you would want to have if you were stranded on a desert island

“I have no idea. I’d want a boat. Get me off of that island.”

Q: Two things you would change about Adelphi:

“It’d be very nice if our meal cards would work off-campus. Being a resident, we’re mandated to buy a meal plan. It’d be nice to go down the street to Adelphi Deli and it could be used there instead of solely with the monopoly of Lackman. It would be nice to dine in the close Garden City community. I think if you’re going to be in a dorm, also, suite style dorms are very nice instead of having communal bathrooms.”

Q: One favorite hobby:

“I love traveling. I’m a traveler. I was born in Germany and lived in Korea. I lived in Europe and I’m studying in Italy next semester.”

Evidence that Adelphi needs a Football Team

A study and article done by Ashley Paterno printed in the latest edition of the Delphian indicates that a large portion of the Adelphi community would love to be home to a football team. It certainly isn't due to a lack of interest on Long Island for football as high school football has a legion of followers and a rich history that has produced many great NFL players. To magnify the importance of football on Long Island and the need for Adelphi to make room for a football team, here are lists of some Long Island high school greats that have played their football on Long Island.

The purpose of this post is to make those out there aware of the sheer impact high school football has on the culture of Long Island. It's a shame that Adelphi can't call any of these athletes their own as they go on to prusue a career after their playing days on Long Island are over. It would be nice for Adelphi to be home to a football team with players that can represent the school rather than being a univeristy that is notoriously linked with former alum Flava Flav.

Men's Soccer

France. Sweden. Canada. Australia. Trinidad. Cyprus. No you’re not at the Geneva Convention. You’re looking at the 2009 Adelphi Men’s Soccer team.

The international presence on the field has led the Panthers to an 9-2-4 start. Adelphi went undefeated in the month of September, outscoring their opponents by a combined 15-3 margin. Adelphi began the month of October with a resounding 3-1 drubbing of Longwood to avenge a tough loss in last years postseason. The win over Longwood gave Adelphi it’s first win in conference play to move to (1-0-1) in the Atlantic Soccer Conference. Senior Kevin Gluchowski finds the mixture of talent and diversity as a big reason to why Adelphi has been successful this season.

“What's special about this team this year is that we have a core group of returnees from last year plus an extremely large freshman class, so you can see everyone learning from one another. Moving forward we just need to stay the course and focus on one game at a time,” said Gulchowski.

Much of this success can be attributed to the dominance shown early by the French freshman Issa Tall.

Tall has showed the faintest signs of being a freshman as he has started in every game. The midfielder has scored 13 goals in the first 14 Division I collegiate games of his career. Tall also leads the team in points (27) and has notched 3 game winning goals. Despite leading the team in these categories, Tall explains his early successes are a product of a team effort.

“Even as a freshman, I feel well in this team. That's true that I am leading the team with points but I’m not alone on the field. Thanks to my teammates’ for doing well because they give me a certain freedom and a confidence therefore I adapted quickly and scored goals.”

Tall scored both of the goals needed to beat Big East foe Syracuse, 2-1, marking one of the biggest wins in Adelphi University history. Head Coach Carlo Aquista believes Issa’s international experience has made the jump to Division I soccer an easier transition.

“Issa brings a ton of international experience coming from France. He played at a high youth level there. The learning curve in college soccer, he’s picked it up very quickly. His impact has been tremendous, 11 goals in 12 games. His impact has been vital,” says Coach Aquista.

New Conference, No Problem for Panthers Volleyball

BY JOHN OTANO

The Northeast-10 is the new home to Adelphi this season and Adelphi Volleyball is making themselves right at home.

The Panthers pushed their perfect record in the Northeast-10 to 8-0 in conference play and 16-6 overall with a win over Assumption on Saturday, October 10th. The Panthers are winners of their last 8 contests.

Junior Hilary Pavels, who was recently named Northeast-10 player of the week (9/28), leads the assault with 202 kills on the year. Despite losing players that have etched their legacy into the record books here at Adelphi, this years team isn’t short on players that have assaulted some of the same records.

Going into this season, Senior Amy Williams continues to build upon her all-time digs record at Adelphi in her final season with 1,362 digs. Williams has amassed nearly 258 digs that is slightly ahead of Pavels for the team lead in digs. Junior Heather Mau is currently adding to her 1,438 assists which ranks 4th on the all-time Career assists leaders at Adelphi. Along with Panther Seniors Anna Gabbard, who is second on the team in kills with 158, and Senior Audrey Goss who has compiled 91 kills, leads a team that continues to steamroll over the Northeast-10.

“I want to win the Northeast-10. I want to make a splash as soon as we get in,” says Goss.

The Panthers look to stretch their winning streak to 9 games when they travel to Waltham, Massachusetts on October 16th for a date with Bentley.

BY JOHN OTANO

The Panthers continued their race to the top of the standings in the Northeast-10 conference with a resounding shutout of conference rival Pace University, 3-0, on September 16. It is the Panthers’ fifth win in their first six games, with four of those wins coming in conference play.

Adelphi entered the game as the 15th ranked Division II team in the nation and could rise with the win as Pace fell to 1-4-1 overall and 0-4 in conference play.

From the outset of the game, the Panthers were aggressive and got off 29 shots for the game while holding Pace to only three.

Junior Brianne McDonnell started the onslaught of offense by zipping through the defense off an assist from senior captain Kayte Kinsley. McDonnell, who leads the Panthers in goals (4), assists (3), and points (11), sent a ball soaring through the night, bending it just past Pace goalie Courtany Hagen.

The Panthers struck again just a minute later with an attack that ended with senior Karen Roveto getting her first goal of the season off a cross from junior Kristen Dexter. They continued their dominance through the second half when senior Amanda Popoli guided a pass from fellow senior Caitlin Morrison to find the back of the net to seal an Adelphi victory.

Head coach Rich Ilsley praised his team for their performance, but said that he couldn’t use this game as a measuring stick for the future of the season.

“We played well,” he said, “but I don’t think it was a particularly strong team that we played so it kind of gives you a false sense."

For the past 19 years, Ilsley has led the Women’s Soccer program to 10 of the last 18 NCAA Division II tournaments. Over that span, Ilsley has amassed a staggering 249-70-25 record.

Ilsley’s overall winning percentage has him ranked 13th among all NCAA coaches and second at the Division II level. He attributes much of his success to being fortunate enough to have had great players to coach.

“It’s no secret that if you don’t have the right people pulling the cart, you’re not going anywhere,” he said. “The key is to have good players and getting them to work together.”

Success for the team is measured with league championships and an entry into the NSCAA Division II tournament. Last season the Panthers finished with a 14-4-1 record but missed a bid to the NSCAA tournament, which qualifies it as a disappointing season by team standards. Ilsley made it clear that the goal of his program, every year, is not only to gain a bid but to also do well throughout the tournament.

“That is always the goal,” Ilsley said. “That is the end all, be all. That was our disappointment last year; we didn’t get a bid. That is always the goal of this team is to make it into the tournament. Once you make it in, once you get your foot in the door, then everything is open.

“Is it attainable? Yes. Can we? That remains to be seen.”

Although the bar is set incredibly high for his players, Junior Brianne McDonnell made it clear that Adelphi Women’s Soccer is ready to clear the bar completely.

“One thing that is special about Adelphi Women's Soccer is that every year we have a team that can compete for a National Championship. That is our main goal every year: to be the last team standing in the nation. This year I really think that we can do it. We have proved ourselves to be competitive and we have beaten some of the best teams in the nation and are good enough to not settle for anything less.”

Despite the competitive nature of this group of girls, McDonnell explains that this team is more than just your ordinary soccer club.

“This team has grown to be a family. It is great to be a part of a group of girls that I can call my best friends. We all support each other on and off the field no matter what.”

Web Journalism Project

This is a project that was constructed with still photos and iMovie to create a short story about my life. During this semester, weekly insight will be pouring in as it's a requirement in my Web Journalism class that I am taking.

This is a project strictly as an exercise in learning the new iMovie program and narrating over video/photos. Enjoy.

Life is short but sweet for certain.
